The Miles Magister was the first monoplane designed specifically as a trainer for the RAF and was also used by the Fleet Air Arm. Affectionately known as the Maggie, the Magister was based on Miles’ civilian Hawk Major and Hawk Trainer. As a low-wing monoplane, it was an ideal introduction to the Spitfire and Hurricane for new pilots.

Production began in October 1937 and continued until 1941 by which time 1,203 had been built by Miles and an additional 100 were built under licence in Turkey.

The Fairchild Argus is a four-seat light transport aircraft designed in the 1930s. Its strong undercarriage made it ideal for flying from grass airfields and it could also adapted for floats for water-based operations.

It was used by the United States Army Air Corps (known as the Fairchild 24) and some aircraft were fitted with two 100-pound bombs for missions against German U-boats. It was also used by the Royal Air Force, where it was known as the Fairchild Argus and used mostly for ferrying aircrew.

The Reid and Sigrist R.S.3 was a British twin-engined, three-seat advanced trainer developed in the Second World War but it never entered production. It was rebuilt with a different nose as the R.S.4 Bobsleigh so that it could be used to test the advantage of having the pilot in a prone position to minimise the effects of high G.

The plane wsa later used for aerial photography until the 1970s. It has just been restored and should be flying again soon.

Fred Sigrist had been chief engineer for Sopwith until after WWI, was a founder member of the Hawker Aircraft Company and joint managing director of the Gloster Aircraft Co. Squadron-Leader George Hancock Reid DFC designed some widely used aircraft insturments.
