As Airbnb continues to have an effect on small-property owners in Spain and cruise ships pollute Venice’s water, anti-tourism protests are spreading across Europe. Thousands are taking to the streets in protest, and governments are responding with new policies.
Barcelona is taking the lead for Spain’s crackdown on unlicensed Airbnb rentals.
In Milan, there’s a ban on selfie sticks in the Darsena area. Head south to Rome and you’ll find a ban on nighttime drinking in its streets.
Even countries like Croatia are locking in. There’s a $700 fine for wearing swimsuits in the historic center of Hvar, while Dubrovnik has placed a tourist limit in its old town district.
Overall, the complaints range from overcrowding to a lack of housing. Spain alone had a record 75 million tourists last year. With terrorism worries driving more Europeans to holiday closer to home, the forecast for summer trouble may only get worse.
