The U.S. national team traveled to Canada a month ago with one job: Win the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1999.

It accomplished that mission with aplomb and panache in the Women’s World Cup final, thanks to a stunning hat trick by midfielder Carli Lloyd in the game’s first 16 minutes. The 5-2 victory was sweetened even more because it came against Japan, which beat the U.S. in the 2011 final in a major upset that went to penalty kicks.
