Benchmade 470 Emissary: “Fancy EDC Delivers” by Nutnfancy

This fancy little EDC blade makes good on its utility capabilities and does it with class. The contoured CNC milled aluminum handle is media blasted grey and makes for a handsome presentation. But while looks are important, it’s 1st Kind of Cool that really matters in this POU. The 470 Emissary doesn’t disappoint. The 3″ drop point blade is made of the “uptown” S30V CPM steel with advantages of vanadium carbides, toughness, edge holding, rust resistance, and fine grain structure. This Emissary is scary sharp out of box, representing the usual Benchmade keen edge. The blade shape possesses some belly and a welcome sharp tip for detail work. Deployment speed is auto-like in this assisted opening Axis lock folder. Again who needs an auto with speed like this? The dual thumbstuds are easily reached within the handle contours and they don’t have any volcanoe issues. After adjustment, lockup is tight with no side to side or vertical play. The Axis lock remains a favorite locking mechanism and is plenty strong for this EDC role (check out that stop pin!). The polished pocket clip contrasts well with the grey handles and is almost perfect in design. Its loop over design is strong, not too large, holds tight, and carries deep. Recessing the handle when the clip connects would flush mount the clip for more streamlining and better looks. Thankfully the compact Emissary carries tip up, made possible (at least for BM) by the inclusion of a safety button that locks the blade in both positions. Carry weight and size simply rocks: 2.2 ounces and a very narrow .45″ in width. Few EDC blades, especially of this quality, exist with this portability. A few downsides exist. Some report that grey handles (not anodized) will show wear readily. Also jimmpling is absent topside, a decision of style perhaps. But otherwise ergos are excellent throughout for its EDC POU. Value is moderate at a street price of $130 to $150 and other great options, reviewed and shown throught the years here in TNP, also offer exceptional service at better pricing levels. However few do it with such class with such a premium blade steel and locking mechanism like the little Emissary.
