Protesters clashed with riot-clad police in Baltimore on Monday following the funeral of Freddie Gray, who died while in police custody on April 19.

In a quickly escalating standoff, demonstrators threw rocks and bottles at the police who responded using mace against the crowd. At least one car was torched.

At least seven officers were seriously injured, according to Capt. Eric Kowalczyk of the Baltimore police who spoke at a press conference that took place even as clashes continued. Injuries included broken bones and one officer is still unconscious, he said, describing the protesters as “criminals who violently and without provocation attacked our police officers.”

Many of the protesters appeared to be teenagers.
