This blood delivery drone network is connecting hospitals to each other — and no, it’s not a prototype.

In the first drone network of its kind, the machines fly blood samples through dense urban areas, using a connected app to schedule deliveries. The network will start full service in Switzerland by 2018

Each drone can transport 4 pounds and fly up to 12 miles. Samples stay locked in a separate compartment until a unique QR code is scanned into the docking station.

The makers hope to help more than just hospitals in the future, envisioning delivery stations at grocery stores and gas stations. That sounds good as long as they don’t deliver blood to a Whole Foods.
