British authorities are alarmed in the violent uptick in the number of acid attacks in London, which nearly doubled between 2015 and 2016.

Acid attacks are being used as an alternative to knives and guns, which carry harsh penalties if found in one’s possession. CCTV footage released by British police showed a recent acid attack outside a bar in east London, in which the victim lost vision in his left eye.

In 2016, there were more than 450 such attacks in London, a significant spike from the 261 in 2015.

Now, some U.K. lawmakers want carrying acid to be made illegal. But since many acid attacks are carried out using household products, preventing them is proving difficult for the British police.
