Microsoft Windows 10 Has Yet Another Update Problem
Microsoft released a new update to Windows dubbed the ‘May 2020 Update’, also known as version 2004, but it’s unfortunately unavailable for many users of worlds most popular PC operating system. The Verge reported that users are seeing a notice that their devices were not able to download the update.
The update was initially made available last week, and it was mostly made up of small but very useful tweaks that included a visual update to Microsoft’s Cortana virtual assistant, key improvements to File Explorer, and the inclusion of a Cloud Download feature that allows users to reinstall Windows from the cloud instead useing optical media or a flash drive.
There have, however, been several issues with the update and Microsoft has acknowledged this in its ‘known issues’ post. These problems include issues with with audio drivers, variable refresh rates on certain GPUs, and an error when devices disconnect or connect from a Thunderbolt dock. It also has trouble with with older Nvidia display drivers.
These issues seem to only affect certain hardware, though, and they have seemingly been classified as serious enough for Microsoft to choose to prevent many users from receiving the update.
If you look in the Windows Update panel on your device, you may notice the following: “The Windows 10 May 2020 Update is on its way. We’re offering this update to compatible devices, but your device isn’t quite ready for it. Once your device is ready, you’ll see the update available on this page. There’s nothing you need to do at this time.”
This message is not only showing up on OEM PCs, but it also appears on custom-built systems. Overall, people are reporting that only a small number of devices are able to receive the update presently.
In earlier versions of Windows, if an update wasn’t available for a certain device, the update in question wouldn’t even appear even if the user clicked “Check for updates”. Now, Windows is acknowledging that your PC would get an update but that it is not available for your device yet. This will reassure users who may have heard about an update but are confused when they check for updates and don’t see anything new for their system.
How do I Fix a Windows 10 Update Error?
- Make sure that your device has enough space.
- Run Windows Update a few times.
- Check third-party drivers and download any updates.
- Unplug extra hardware.
- Check Device Manager for errors.
- Remove third-party security software.
- Repair hard-drive errors.
- Do a clean restart into Windows.
