Coral reefs are dying at alarming rates and, with them, the plants and animals that depend on them for food and shelter. It’s an ecological crisis that has stymied scientists. Is 3D-printing the answer?

Reef Design Labs, an Australian organization, has started 3D-printing structures that mimic coral. This allows polyps and other tiny reef-dependent organisms to find shelter, and attracts the accompanying biodiversity that makes reefs one of the most important global ecosystems.
