My friend lost his phone in a taxi and he never backed up any of his contacts. I told him when he gets his next phone, do this as it takes less than 30 seconds.

Galaxy s2 & s3 steps:
Click on contacts, menu, merge with google, press okay when asked to merge with google account, then select your gmail account. Now go and log into your gmail account and click on “gmail” on the top left hand corner above “compose” then click “contacts”.

Galaxy s1 steps:
Click on contacts, menu, more, import/export, export to SD card.

Now all your contacts are on your SD card.
Now, click on contacts, menu, more, import/export, IMPORT FROM SD CARD, then choose your gmail/google account and bam! Then go and log into your gmail account and click on “gmail” on the top left hand corner above “compose” then click “contacts”.
