LG Unveils New 2024 OLED TV Range

Published on January 4, 2024

There are few, if any, annual AV-related announcements that generate more excitement than LG’s yearly unveiling of its latest OLED TV lineup. I’m delighted to report that this year’s revelation has come ahead of schedule, just in time for the 2024 CES in Las Vegas, set to begin next week.

While LG’s latest OLED range may appear to be more of an evolutionary step forward compared to the revolutionary leap we witnessed with last year’s G3 series in 2023, there’s still a multitude of thrilling developments awaiting serious AV enthusiasts.

Reflecting on the significant advancement in WRGB technology that LG’s G3 models introduced last year through their utilization of Micro Lens Array technology, a crucial component of LG’s premium OLED picture quality enhancement known as Brightness Booster Max technology, let’s first delve into LG’s latest offering, the G4 range.

The primary enhancement in the visual realm is expected to be driven by a groundbreaking new processor, christened Alpha 11 AI, rather than the anticipated Alpha 10 engine that would have logically succeeded the 2023 Alpha 9 processor. To provide some quantifiable context for the Alpha 11 AI buzz, LG claims that the new chipset will deliver a fourfold increase in AI performance compared to its predecessor, a 1.7x boost in graphics performance, and a 1.3x improvement in overall processing power, all complemented by 2.5GB of RAM.

The most significant revelation concerning the Alpha 11 processor is that LG’s AI Picture Pro, a deep learning-powered image enhancement system, can now function seamlessly across all sources, including devices connected to the TV via HDMI. This marks a significant departure from its previous limitations, where it only operated with broadcast content and select streaming services.

The updated AI Picture Pro system incorporates the latest iterations of genre and scene analysis, AI Super Resolution, Noise Reduction, and the OLED Dynamic Tone Mapping Pro engine features. Notably, the latter divides the image into thousands of analysis blocks to enhance tone mapping efficiency. However, Alpha 11 also introduces two potentially game-changing AI Picture Pro features: Object Enhancement by Visual Perception and AI Director Processing.
