Google Ends Fitbit Smartwatches — Key Details You Need to Know

Published on August 19, 2024

The fate of Fitbit’s smartwatches was sealed the moment Google introduced its first Pixel Watch back in October 2022. It was evident that Google needed an in-house competitor to challenge the best Apple Watch, and they planned to leverage Fitbit’s technology to achieve that. Despite continuing to produce some of the top Fitbit devices alongside Pixel, it seems that era is coming to an end.

As reported by our partner site TechRadar, Google has quietly confirmed the discontinuation of Fitbit Sense and Versa smartwatches. Moving forward, Fitbit’s lineup will be limited to fitness trackers like the Fitbit Charge and Fitbit Inspire. Any new developments in Fitbit smartwatch technology, such as watch faces or wellness features, will likely be reserved exclusively for Pixel Watch devices.

Tom’s Guide has reached out to Google for independent confirmation of this information and will provide updates if and when we receive a response. As someone who has been using Fitbit products since the original Fitbit Flex, it’s disappointing to hear — though, admittedly, it isn’t a surprise.

For many who aren’t deeply immersed in the tech world, Fitbit was the go-to wearable. In our review of the Fitbit Sense 2 earlier this year, my colleague Kate described it as fantastic, noting that it features some of the most useful and advanced wellness sensors and insights available on any tracker, making it an ideal choice for those who want to monitor their physical and mental health.

The big question now is how Google will support users who have invested in devices like the Sense 2 or Versa 4. While Google has already requested users to migrate their Fitbit accounts to Google accounts, it has promised to support Fitbit accounts until 2025. However, the duration of support for the devices themselves remains uncertain.

Additionally, there’s nothing stopping Google from disabling features post-purchase as they become obsolete. Both the Fitbit Sense 2 and Fitbit Versa 4 launched with Wi-Fi support disabled and no option for local audio playback.

In March 2024, Fitbit shut down community features in the Fitbit app, including Challenges and Adventures. Virtual Trophies were discontinued earlier, while the newly announced Pixel Watch 3 includes free access to some of Fitbit Premium’s most useful tools, such as the daily Readiness Score and Target Load.

Although Fitbit smartwatches were clearly in Google’s sights as the Pixel Watch grew stronger, the future of its activity trackers is less clear. Google quietly launched the Fitbit Charge 6 last October, and the Fitbit Ace LTE for kids was released without much attention earlier this year. We also recently learned that Peloton workouts will be integrated into the Fitbit app next month.

It’s possible that we might see a lower-cost “Pixel Tracker” at some point to complement the higher-end Pixel Watch. Alternatively, Google might keep the Fitbit brand alive to compete with other top fitness trackers from brands like Garmin and Amazfit.

Whatever happens, it’s uncertain whether Fitbit, as we know it, will make a strong comeback in the years ahead. The future seems to be centered around Pixel now.
