Apple Unveils New AirTag with Extended Range and Enhanced Findability
Losing everyday essentials — keys, wallets, luggage, or even professional equipment — remains one of modern life’s most persistent frustrations. With its newest AirTag, Apple is doubling down on a simple promise: helping users recover what matters, faster and with greater confidence. Announced today, the updated AirTag builds on the success of its predecessor with a broader finding range, louder audio alerts, and deeper integration across Apple’s ecosystem.
Apple says the new AirTag continues to rely on the scale and strength of the Find My network, turning millions of Apple devices worldwide into a privacy-first safety net. The result is a tracker designed not only to locate missing items, but to reduce the anxiety that comes with losing them in the first place.
Since AirTag first launched in 2021, customers across the globe have shared stories of being reunited with lost luggage, keys, bicycles, bags, and other valuables. In one case, a musician used an AirTag placed inside an instrument case to recover a missing instrument in time to perform that very evening. In another, a traveler was able to locate luggage containing critical, lifesaving medication.
Designed exclusively for tracking objects, AirTag includes industry-leading protections against unwanted tracking. The new model is available starting today at the same price as its predecessor: $29 for a single AirTag and $99 for a four-pack, with free personalized engraving available through apple.com and the Apple Store app.

Enhanced Range and Findability
At the heart of the new AirTag is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip — the same technology found in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra 3, and Apple Watch Series 11. This upgrade significantly improves locating accuracy, particularly in crowded or complex environments such as airports, apartment buildings, or busy city streets.
Using haptic, visual, and audio feedback, Precision Finding now guides users to their items from up to 50 percent farther away than before.¹ An upgraded Bluetooth chip further extends the distance at which AirTag can be detected, helping bridge the gap between “somewhere nearby” and “exactly here.”
For the first time, Precision Finding is also available on Apple Watch Series 9 or later, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. This brings item tracking directly to the wrist, allowing users to follow directional cues without pulling out their iPhone — a subtle but meaningful shift for users on the move.

Louder Alerts for Real-World Scenarios
Apple has also reworked the AirTag’s internal design, delivering a speaker that is 50 percent louder than the previous generation and audible from up to twice the distance. Paired with a distinctive new chime, the upgraded sound makes it easier to locate items that are hidden, muffled, or buried out of sight.
Whether it’s keys wedged between couch cushions, a wallet slipped into a jacket pocket, or a bag left behind in a rush, the combination of louder audio cues and improved Precision Finding aims to shorten the time between realizing something is missing and getting it back.

The Find My Network and Share Item Location
The Find My app remains central to the AirTag experience, offering a unified way to locate AirTag, Apple devices, and compatible third-party accessories — while also helping users stay connected with friends and family. Privacy remains a core design principle throughout.
When an AirTag moves beyond the range of its paired iPhone, the Find My network steps in. This crowdsourced system uses Bluetooth signals from nearby Apple devices to detect lost items and securely relay their approximate location back to the owner, without revealing the identity or location of the people assisting in the process.
The new AirTag also integrates seamlessly with Share Item Location, an iOS feature designed to help users recover misplaced belongings by temporarily and securely sharing their location with trusted third parties, such as airlines. Apple has partnered with more than 50 airlines worldwide to privately support this feature, helping streamline the recovery of delayed or lost luggage.
With Share Item Location, users can grant a participating airline’s customer service team access to an item’s location. According to SITA, a leading IT provider for airlines, carriers report that the feature has reduced baggage delays by 26 percent and cut instances of permanently lost luggage by 90 percent. Access is limited to authorized personnel through secure Apple Account or partner authentication, and sharing automatically ends once the item is recovered, can be stopped at any time, and expires after seven days.

Industry-Leading Security Features
Privacy and security remain foundational to AirTag’s design. The new AirTag does not store location data or history on the device itself, and all communication with the Find My network is protected by end-to-end encryption. Only the owner of an AirTag can access its location information.
Apple — and anyone else — cannot see which devices help locate a missing AirTag. Designed solely for tracking objects rather than people or pets, AirTag incorporates a suite of industry-first protections against unwanted tracking, including cross-platform alerts and Bluetooth identifiers that rotate frequently to prevent misuse.

Environmental Responsibility and Accessory Compatibility
The new AirTag also reflects Apple’s broader environmental commitments under its Apple 2030 initiative, which aims to make the company carbon neutral across its entire footprint by the end of the decade.
AirTag’s enclosure is made with 85 percent recycled plastic, all magnets use 100 percent recycled rare earth elements, and Apple-designed printed circuit boards feature 100 percent recycled gold plating. Packaging is entirely fiber-based and fully recyclable.
Importantly for existing users, the new AirTag maintains the same form factor as earlier models, ensuring compatibility with all current AirTag accessories. These include the FineWoven Key Ring, made from 68 percent recycled content and available in five colors.
Pricing and Availability
The new AirTag is available to order today on apple.com and through the Apple Store app, with in-store availability beginning later this week. It will also be sold through Apple Authorized Resellers.
