This new standard is set to supersede the existing Qi and is built with a Magnetic Power Profile, making it easier for devices to attach exactly to the charger, resulting in improved charging speeds and reduced losses. Paul Struhsaker, the executive director of the WPC, stated that people have trouble determining which devices are Qi-certified and which are utilizing the Qi technology but don’t have accreditation from the Consortium. It has been revealed that a new wireless protocol known as Qi2 has been developed, particularly for magnetic charging purposes.

The Qi2 should solve these issues and become the global standard, ensuring interoperability. Numerous famous firms such as Samsung and Google are members of the WPC and use the Qi technology for wireless charging on their phones, smartwatches and audio accessories but are not Qi-certified as they have a non-standard application of the technology.

Struhsaker suggested that transitioning to Qi2 with magnets will provide a substantial boost to sustainability as it would require fewer cables and chargers. Furthermore, the earliest Qi2-certified mobiles and chargers will be available at the end of 2020.
