Shotgun Slugs vs Cheap, loosely-secured knives

Does a knife have to be firmly-secured in order to split a shotgun slug on it? I think I got these knives free at the mall for signing up for a Sears credit card. They are bottom of the barrel in quality. We are always told that our targets need to be more secure- but is that really true?
