North Koreans defecting to South Korea face an unexpected challenge: they don’t speak the same language.
An unusual app is looking to solve this problem by enabling users to translate unfamiliar words into “North Korean.” The two Koreas separated World War II, and the time apart has led to variations and separate dialects.
There are 27,000 defectors living in South Korea. North Korean NGO “Dream Touch” created the app, with the hopes of minimizing gaps and helping to smooth the already difficult transition for those fleeing the North.
