Neil deGrasse Tyson talks to Rob Rhinehart, the founder and CEO of Soylent. Neil tries Soylent and gives his take on the meal replacement drink. Together, the two discuss the future of food.

“Rising Stars” is a one-on-one interview series hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. The renowned astrophysicist and host of StarTalk Radio talks with the next generation of leaders in innovation and tech.

Rhinehart’s company is “trying to make food better” with meal replacement products. Soylent makes drinks and powders that it says can replenish your body with the vitamins and nutrients it needs. Rhinehart says the goal is to “use science to improve the food system.”

The product is very popular in tech circles like Silicon Valley.

The company’s name is a reference to the 1973 science fiction thriller film “Soylent Green,” starring Charlton Heston, and to the 1966 science fiction novel “Make Room! Make Room!” by Harry Harrison. Both works of fiction look at the problems of overpopulation and its burden on Earth’s resources.
