My friend Jesse (aka. TribalInstincts) invited me over to try his HTC VIVE pre-release virtual reality setup and I share my in-depth experience with it. I have to say after spending several hours using it I’m starting to feel like it could be an Oculus Rift killer!

▼ Questions & Answers ▼
Q) How can you compare it to the RIFT?
A) I’ll admit, I haven’t used the latest RIFT because it has not been available to me and it might be better. But the experience including the full room tracking and the controllers honestly changed my entire perception of VR and I no longer view it as just for stationary games.

Q) How many games utilize the HTC VIVE?
A) The library is fairly small right now for VIVE specific games but it works great with existing games and anything the RIFT works with this will to and I can’t imagine how head and hand tracking could get any better. I could throw the controllers into the air and catch them while wearing the headset!

Q) Did HTC pay you for the review?
A) Absolutely not! I don’t have a dog in this fight. I really want the best VR solution to win and so far this has been the best by far that I’ve tried. The fact they cleaned up the bad screen door effect and made seeing longer distances much more clean coupled with perfect head tracking making it so you can wear it for hours without any fatigue is pretty awesome.

Q) What is the FOV of and frame rate of the VIVE?
A) 90 FPS per eye and a FOV of 110°

Q) Did you adjust the timing in the video to make it seem less laggy then it really is?
A) No, a lot of videos I’ve seen online do frame syncing on VR related projects so you think their is no lag when their really is. My video is synced by the audio histogram which means they are perfectly in alignment down to the millisecond. Watch when I throw the controller in the air and catch it by the handle. I think this demo shows exactly how perfect the tracking is not just in timing but all relative position of the controllers from your actual eyes.
