Technology giant Facebook has been under scrutiny for the longest time possible. The social media giant earlier last month was discovered as snooping on its users and sharing the personal information with the London-based data firm, Cambridge Analytica. The company CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared before the Congressional Committee only to be questioning regarding the matter. Now, in response to recent concerns about Facebook’s handling of user data, Bumble has gone on to announce that it will drop its Facebook login requirement for users. The dating application goes on to allow users to log in and register for an account through the use of a smartphone number, starting from tomorrow. According to a new report that first appeared on WIRED, the dating application will now be allowing users to log in and register for an account through the use of a number.

The decision came up after Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress to answer questions regarding the recent Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal. It appears that the London-based data mining company, which went on to be hired by the Trump campaign back in 2016, had gained improper access to Facebook data with the objective to target potential voters. In the wake of the recent scandal, the social media giant has gone onto launch a new set of privacy tools. The company has also been showing off a shut down a product that will eventually allow third-party data providers to target Facebook toward the end. At the same time, there are many – who are still concerned with the social media’s reach outside of its platform. A report by The Verge quoted Louise Troen, Bumble’s VP of international marketing as saying, “Many of our users and prospective users asked for an alternative registration method.”

At the moment, Bumble’s current set of privacy policy goes on to state that it can efficiently collect “login information and friend lists for social media accounts once the user connects their applications with the Bumble accounts. The social media accounts that users can use includes Facebook as well as Instagram. Apart from this, the phone number login method will end up allowing users to avoid the given situation. Numerous applications including Tinder, Match and OK Cupid goes on to offer phone number login methods. However, there are times when many users still depend on Facebook for the applications to run smoothly.

Earlier this month, there were dozens of Tinder users who were logged in via Facebook were booted off the app due to a bug prompted by the social media giant’s privacy fixes. “Earlier this month, dozens of Tinder users who were logged in via Facebook have booted off the app due to a bug prompted by Facebook’s new privacy fixes,” notes an online report. As far as Facebook is concerned, it seems like the company will now be working toward fixing their brand. However, as said by Mark Zuckerberg himself, the company won’t be incurring a huge loss. It would make sense as Facebook is already in possession of many other companies that are equally popular including WhatsApp and Instagram. Therefore, it does not necessarily come across as a huge problem for Facebook officials as such.
