Building an Explosively Pumped Laser – Detonator Circuit04:33

You’ve heard me mention the explosive laser in my previous videos, and now I’m finally working on it! I will be posting a series of videos documenting my progress on this giant laser.

In this video I go over a little bit of background on why I want to build an explosive laser, and compare it to your typical flashlamp pumped ruby laser. I also show off my detonator circuit, which uses a MOT (transformer from a microwave oven) drivenby a variac and rectified to 2000V DC to charge up a capacitor bank. The output is hooked up to an SCR so I can control the pulse remotely. I am hoping that using a somewhat beefy capacitor bank to light the flash powder will make it ignite fast enough to effectively pump laser media. I will need an oscilloscope to know for sure though…
