What’s up Nerdgasm fans! In this episode I unbox and review the AVerMedia Live Gamer HD PCIe 1x HDMI/DVI Video Capture card. I purchased this to replace my Elgato Game Capture HD that I have been using for a while because the lag on the Elgato was 2 – 3 seconds and it made it nearly impossible to love stream in OBS or XSplit due to the synchronization problems between webcams and other sources. This card not only solves that problem but the video quality is much better on 1080p and it also corrected some other problems I had like HDMI audio popping which I beleive was caused by the USB bus connected to the Elgato.

In this video I show you the unboxing of the card along with physical installation into the PC with software deployment. I also walk you though capturing a video source from the HDMI out on a camera like the Canon 5D Mark II and I also show you screen capture during Battlefield 3 gameplay from OBS (Open Broadcaster), XSplit and AverMedia RECentral. All of these softwares work wonderfully with this card.

I did run into a few minor bugs that I need to get worked out and I will update the description when I get more information. The bugs are that when the HDMI disconnects and reconnects in OBS and XSPLIT it sometimes sets the audio recording source back to HDMI instead of analog audio in which I configured it for in the beginning to capture audio from my Mackie 802-VLZ3 mixer. I also had some minor problems with the software not wanting to shut down and I would have to forcefully terminate it.

The card also looks amazing when live streaming on Twitch.TV because the compression the card does in hardware is just fantastic. By default the local recording is at 12000 kbps and it couldn’t look better but even at 8000 kbps for live streaming it still looks stunning. The card also capture at full 1080p 30fps which is nice, I always felt like the Elgato Game Capture HD was just upsampling the 1080i to 1080p.

All the recording done in the video was via the following hardware…
Canon 5D Mark II w/ 24-105mm lens
Rode Video Mic
Logitech C920 Web Cams
AVerMedia Live Gamer HD (connected to both camera and DVI out from computer)
F&V R300 LED Studio Lights

Best capture card hands down I have ever used, I would highly recommend it. The Elgato Game Capture HD is good if you want to just capture game play from a laptop on the go but this is a much more solid solution for serious live streamers and youtube producers that want the best quality possible with the least amount of work.
