A Turkish animal rights group and an international animal charity have teamed up to rescue imperiled animals from an abandoned zoo in the war-torn Syrian city of Aleppo.

The Syrian civil war is at the heart of a global crisis of displacement and refugee movement. After some of the most intense fighting in Syria’s second-largest city, the war has reached the walls and fences of a local zoo.

Three lions, two tigers, two bears, and two hyenas from the Aleppo zoo are now being treated at a wildlife shelter in Turkey.

After workers fled the city, the emaciated critters had been left to fend for themselves at the Magic World Zoo. Some animals did not survive the relentless bombing.

A second rescue is planned to save the zoo’s remaining inhabitants. They will all be placed in new homes once they have completed rehabilitation.
