Does not matter if your Android smartphone has miracast (screen mirroring) feature or not. This is one of the pros with Chromecast versus other screen mirroring devices. However you will need at least Android 4.1.
In this video I use my Samsung Galaxy J5 which does not support miracast but you will see that i can screen mirror using chrome cast with the Google home app.

I also go a step further with good info about the difference between casting/streaming vs screen mirroring. Let me know if anybody need help or have any questions.
