Daniel Defense is high quality company and it churns out AR-15s we love here in TNP. So maybe it’s time to take a look at their .308 AR-10 offering, the DD5 series. The Daniel Defense DD5V1 .308 therefore was put through some paces in TNP. The results surprised us especially since the gun is universally praised by guntubers repeating the company’s talking points and lauding its awesomeness. Our experience was different and is shared honestly. Testing revealed that DD5V1 has a substantial recoil impulse and was completely unreliable with certain loads. As a Direct Gas Impingement design, the DD5 should operate 100% with a wide variety of loads; it does not. In fact several casings stuck so back special tools were needed to unjam the gun. An undersized gas port hole and perhaps a tight match sized chamber might be the culprits. We wonder how these guns are fielded and sold without these simple tests we do here in TNP. The DD5 .308 did prove to be extremely accurate with an excellent trigger; expect 1 MOA when good shooters do the work. The rubber-covered furniture and plastic dustcover are annoyances but we can live with it. The handguard is excellent but its attachment method probably adds weight. Takedown, ergos, build parts are covered. Contrasts in SAWC, POU, value, and more are drawn with other SAPRs such as the S&W M&P10 SAPR. The DD5 is expensive which will also drive the likability scale.

Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 1 Star in current form; when fixed 3.5 Stars (cost considered)
