In this video, I show you the difference an extra gigabyte (GB) of RAM makes when I compare the SGS3 (2 GB) and HTC EVO 4G LTE (1 GB) by loading up 16 applications in the background. I take a look at the RAM usage (in the task manager) on both phones in intervals of 4 apps loaded so you can see how the RAM changes as you open up more and more apps and how this affects the performance of each device.

Overall, having an extra gigabyte of RAM doesn’t make that big of a difference when you have only a couple of applications running in the background. However, the difference becomes much more noticeable once you start loading over 10-15 apps.

This is because when you switch to and from them, the phone with 2GB of RAM won’t have to reload any apps because they’ll still be open while the phone with 1GB will have to reopen the apps as Android will have automatically closed (or killed) some of the apps in the background to free up some RAM (because it gets close to the maximum).
